The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) banned cryptocurrency trading in India in 2018, citing concerns over the potential risks of money laundering and terrorist financing. RBI stated that cryptocurrencies were not backed by any assets, making them a highly volatile and risky investment. Additionally, RBI was concerned about the lack of regulation and control over virtual currencies, which could potentially pose a threat to the stability of the financial system.
The RBI ban on cryptocurrency was also challenged in the Supreme Court of India, which eventually lifted the ban in March 2020, stating that the RBI had not provided any evidence to justify the ban. However, the Indian government is still working on a framework to regulate the cryptocurrency market in India.
