Ghashiram’s young daughter, Lalita Gauri, is a minor character in the play because she does not have any dialogue and does not participate in the action. Yet she is important she plays the role of a catalyst as she sets the main events in motion. After her extreme youth and budding beauty get the attention of the lecherous Nana, he falls after her to fulfil his lust and he is willing to give anything to get her. This lustful passion is exploited by Ghashiram to get his objective fulfilled. The innocent girl is used as a pawn in this evil design. She becomes a Nana’s prey. She dies as informed by the midwife in the play and her body is buried without Ghashiram knowing about it. The father has a major role in his daughter’s fate. He offered his daughter to Nana to achieve his objectives. At the end of the play, just before his death, Ghashiram realizes and admits that he should be punished for his daughter’s death.
Nana Phadnavis
Ghashiram is seen dancing with courtesan
Gulabi at Bavannakhani and Nana Phadnavis enters. At this point, he injured his
leg. To show his sycophancy, Ghashiram bends his back to support his injured
leg. It pleases Nana and he gives him a pearl necklace. After Nana leaves,
Gulabi demands that necklace be given to her. Ghashiram is beaten up after he
resists. When he comes out, he is charged with picking a Brahmin’s pocket and
put in jail. Despite his pleas, he cannot prove his innocence. An English sahib
testifies to Ghashiram’s innocence but in spite of that he is beaten up. The
corruption of the police is highlighted here. After that Ghashiram vows to take
revenge for the humiliation
Ghashiram gets an opportunity to achieve
his objectives when Nana is captivated by his beautiful daughter Lalita Gauri.
Ghashiram lures him and exploit the situation. He then claims “Now he’s in my
hands…” The innocent girl is bargained away so that her father can become the
Kotwal. Ghashiram fails to realize that he has bartered away his daughter and
ransomed his freedom to Nana who means to use him to his advantage as he spells
out in a soliloquy– “what’ll happen is that our misdeeds will be credited to
your account. We do, our Kotwal pays. The opportunity comes in the shape of
Ghashiram”. After that Ghashiram comes dressed as the Kotwal of Poona and the
scene closes.
