Large groups and hierarchies create power differentials. Different people would use different tactics to exert power. Actively engaging in power activities at work is organizational politics. Effective politics skills translate into the use of power. Specifically, organizational politics is defined as, “those activities that are not required as part of one’s formal role in the organization, but that influence, or attempt to influence, the distribution of advantages and disadvantages within the organization.” (Sashkin, 1984; Robbins, 1998).
Political behavior lies on the spectrum of legitimate to illegitimate. Daily life politics at work is referred to as legitimate politics, for example, involving the higher authority, forming alliances with colleagues, impeding official decisions by excessively adhering to rules or negligence, and networking outside of one’s Organization professionally. Illegitimate politics breach the explicit or unsaid organizational rules. These include whistle blowing (reporting misconduct of a fellow employee or the whole Organization), sabotaging (causing disruption or damage to operations), and protesting (including symbolic protests).
