Functions of search engines

A search engine is a computer system made for searching the information. The most well-known applications of search engines are web services made for searching text or graphic information in the World Wide Web. There are also systems that can search for files on FTP-servers, goods in online stores, information in the Usenet newsgroups.

To search for information using a search engine user formulates a search request. The search engine's task is to search for user all the documents that contain any specified keywords, or words, in any way related to the keyword. In this case the search engine generates a search results page. Such a search listing may comprise various types of results, such as web pages, images, audio files. Some search engines also extract information from the appropriate database and web directory.

The search engine is better when it has access to more documents that are relevant to the user's request. Search results may become less relevant due to the nature of algorithms or due to the human factor. As of the 2015 most popular search engine in the world is Google, though there are countries where users expressed a preference for the other search engines.

In search methods and shared services are four types of search engines: systems using web crawlers, the system operated by the person, the hybrid system and the meta-system. The search system architecture typically consists of:

❖ searching bot, that collects information from Internet sites or from other documents,

❖ indexer, provides a quick search on the stored information, and

❖ search engine - a graphical interface for the user experience.
