Flagellates and Ciliates

Structural differences:

Flagellum are long and threadlike positioned on the surface of the cell. Cilia are short and hair like, also positioned on the surface of the cell.

Difference in quantity:

Flagellum are few while cilia are numerous.

Positional difference:

Cilia are found all over the cell, essentially giving it a ‘hairy’ look, while flagellum are positioned at one or two ends of the cell.

Beating differences:

Cilia move in a coordinated manner, all beating at the same time. Flagellum move independently of each other.

Functional differences:

Cilia help in locomotion, feeding, aeration, and other activities, while flagellum’s main function is to provide motility only.
